The Touts Budgens story
“We first entered into forecourt retailing in 2000. I started in business as a mechanic in a garage, going from that to selling petrol and then deciding to expand from just offering petrol to offering customers the opportunity to shop!
“After lots of research we discovered Budgens and so it began! A new shop was built on the forecourt in Langford, four years later this was followed by the acquisition of Cheddar store in 2004, the forecourt store in Nailsea in 2005 and, most recently, Poundbury in 2008.
“Finding the right retail brand was the most important thing for us. We felt that Budgens fitted perfectly, its core values and emphasis being the same as ours – a focus on fresh food, good brands, great promotions and the ability to work with local suppliers and producers.
“What’s more, we’ve found some great people to work with on the way. Darren joined the team as Operations Manager from the Cheddar acquisition in 2004 and we have a fantastic team at each of the stores.” Phil Tout
The Budgen’s History
Founded by John Budgen in 1872, Budgens is believed to be one of the oldest supermarket brands in Great Britain. Initially a small, local grocer, the company has expanded and over time the Budgens name appeared on a number of stores throughout the South of England, establishing a reputation for servicing the local communities around England’s high streets and suburban towns with quality products. In 2002, Budgens became part of the Musgrave Group and today Budgens has over 180 stores UK wide.
