What we stand for..

We are a team with a plan, a core purpose of ‘Service, Quality and Value, without Compromise’ – which underpins everything we do everyday in our stores.

As the battlefield of grocery retailing becomes more and more competitive, we plan to thrive in what we know and do best, ‘creating the future of neighbourhood forecourt retailing’. We believe with our current model, we have the ability to keep creating easy access, easy to buy from local stores. We wish to continue in creating community hubs, with convenience at the forefront of our minds, our customers are able to purchase the things they need to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.

We have always supported ‘local’ wherever we can through community initiatives and local products. Over the years we have been involved in many different local activities from sports events to schools fates and beer and cider festivals to naked calendars. We have now made a commitment within our forecourt Budgens stores to continually show our love of supporting and caring for the community, through our ‘Love Local’ scheme – where we give away £150 every 3 months in each store to two very deserving local causes. These are causes chosen by our customers. ‘Love Local’ is not only about supporting local causes, it also celebrates the local products we sell on ourselves. Every year we go out and search our local areas for new great tastings products, we would be proud to have on ourselves.

You love local and SO DO WE!

From the beginning..

At the very beginning Philip and Lesley Tout owned and ran a repair workshop within the village of Shipham, where Philip was a motor mechanic, selling cars and small amounts of fuel with Lesley looking after all the paperwork. Together wife Philip and Lesley now have over 37 years of experience within the forecourt business.

Having gathered a taster for the forecourt business, Philip and Lesley embarked on a new venture just a mile of so down the road, where they built their first forecourt retailing site in Rowberrow. This site was a 45sqm retail store, where they both operated and worked for 8 years before purchasing the freehold of their now busiest site Langford. After sitting on the site for 10 years, due to existing leases, finally Phil and Lesley were able to begin operating a small store and repair garage. After running the store for a short amount of time, it became apparent that the store had a lot of potential. The store was selling records amounts lots of fresh fruit and vegetables out of a petrol forecourt grocery store to the local community. Realising this potential Phil and Lesley, a couple of years later, extended the store to make it double the size, making the site one of its kind in the UK (according to Forecourt Trader Mag). This extension is when the store became ‘Tout’s Budgens’.

Philip and Lesley Tout went on to purchase, demolish and re-build a petrol forecourt with a Budgens convenience store on the Bristol Road, leaving Nailsea in 2006. This store has since won many leading awards including 'Budgens Store of the Year', 'Best forecourt facilities' in 2008, 'Best Crisps and Snacks Outlet' and 'Neighbourhood Independent Dealer' awards in 2009, with the prestigious 'Forecourt Trader of the Year' award in 2008.

Shortly after purchasing Nailsea, Philip and Lesley embarked onto another business risk, they took on the challenge to run an a 9000 sqft stand alone supermarket in Cheddar, then shortly after they purchased their smallest grocery store in Poundbury... in the Duchys ideal town!

In 2010 the Phil, Lesley and Jonathan, their son, carried out a complete internal re-fit of their Cheddar supermarket to now include in-store concessions of a SUBWAY®, Butchery counter and their very own Pharmacy.

2011 bought about a new addition to their Nailsea store, an introduction of a SUBWAY®.

At the end of 2014 the family then completed an extension and internal re-fit of their Langford store, to make the building half the size again. This extension bought about a lot of new additions and alterations. Firstly the companies third SUBWAY® was installed here, the shop footprint was extended by half again, increasing to a 4800sqft shop. The range of massively increased, the car park extended by 22 spaces, the number of cashier points increased and LED lighting and new energy efficient refrigeration installed.
